Chris Thompson Real Estate office is on the island of Elbow Cay strategically located in the heart of Hope Town. Once a private home, the two-storey Key West style pink building straddles the two main roads in Hope Town – Front St. (Harbour Street) and Back St. (Beach Street) on the island of Elbow Cay, Abaco, Bahamas. The office was once the home of Chris and Peggy Thompson and now is the site for Elbow Cay’s premier award-winning rental agency, Hope Town Hideaways and the island’s longest established real estate agency. Our talented staff is dedicated to ensuring you have a perfect time if you stay a week or if you decide to make Abaco your home.
When you are on Elbow Cay, stop by anytime, we would love to tell you about our island home and share potential investments for you. We are also happy to schedule appointments around your fishing, diving and snorkeling schedule. In Abaco we know how to mix business and pleasure. Call or e-mail ahead and we can narrow down your choices while you are still at home and whisk you to your top picks once you arrive. We are a full-service agency so if you purchase a home, we can manage the property for you. If you would like to share your home with visitors, we offer a comprehensive rental program that includes all marketing and accounting – we make owning on an island easy.
Now that we have confirmed your commitment to our agency, let us introduce our agents – Chris Thompson has been representing landowners in Abaco since 1986 when he returned from college. Along with flying and developing the successful resort and marina, Hope Town Hideaways, he became one of the first licensed brokers in Abaco. For the past decade Chris has been busy with many projects including a 40-slip marina in Guana Cay but certainly the most exciting is polishing one of Abaco’s island jewels – Matt Lowe’s Cay – the most exclusive residence in the Abacos and possibly the Bahamas. Likened to Musha Cay, this island is naturally beautiful and feels secluded with over two miles of waterfront and an interior private marina made of the finest exotic hardwoods. Once a resting spot for Bermuda-based turtler and sometime pirate, Matt Lowe and his motley crew loved the island for its caves and freshwater wells, exotic fruits, high elevation and safe anchorage. Abaconians have plenty of great tales of hidden treasure – purchase the private island today and start the search for the gold or perhaps with the purchase, you’ve found treasure enough….
After dedicating a larger portion of his life to real estate, Chris has sold more property than the other realtors combined. Chris also loves to build and develop but keeping in tune with our precious island and ensuring low impact. In addition to selling the property to a wonderful family, he currently is managing the development of Firefly Inn including 8 villas, restaurant, bar & clubhouse. Chris donates time to the community and was chosen as President of the Elbow Cay Restoration Committee, he worked with other volunteers and rebuilt the Elbow Cay’s entire eastern shoreline. When the Central Government of The Bahamas decided to empower Abaco with her own local government, Chris was appointed by the Right Honourable Hubert Ingraham, Prime Minister of The Bahamas to chairman of the first business licensing board. He was asked and accepted the honor of Justice of the Peace in 2005. Chris is married to college sweetheart, Peggy and has three children. When he is not selling real estate, Chris can be found riding the waves, free diving, sailing or fishing…Abaco is the life for Chris Thompson – no doubt.
Christopher Lightbourn is a favorite agent because he is truly the nicest, friendliest person you will ever meet in your life. He is helpful in every way. This explains his dedication to the Hope Town Fire and Rescue where over the 17 years he has volunteered as a first responder and saved countless lives and rescued folks, ensuring they received proper medical attention. He is 100% Bahamian and loves this island and is willing to share with clients all his local knowledge – except his favorite conch bed! (He might get you a few though!) Christopher is an avid water person and a great sailor – he races with the Abaco Rage team throughout the Bahamas Islands. He and the lovely Amanda Bethel live in a new island home with their daughter Casey. He has been a member of the prestigious Friends of the Environment and spent countless hours assisting Reef Relief by setting moorings to safely anchor boats at Sandy Cay National park, Fowl Cay, Guana Cay and Mermaid’s Reef. Life’s passions include gardening, music (ask about his island CD), scuba diving, ANY KIND of fishing, and bird hunting. Christopher enjoys his large extended family and looks forward to the annual “Lightbourn Family Reunion” in Hope Town each year – like the Kennedys, this large Catholic family has cousins and more cousins and a great time is had by all!
Steve Thompson grew up in the real estate business. His father, Joe was one of the founders of BREA (Bahamas Real Estate Association) and enjoyed many successful years as partners with his older brother Chester Thompson. In addition to real estate sales, Steve runs the property management on the island. Steve is a 10th generation Abaconian and his roots can be traced back to Wyannie Malone on his grandmother’s side and the Eleutheran adventurers on his grandfather’s side. His mother is from Harbour Island though currently residing in Nassau. His wife Susan is the only professional interior in the area and has clients all over the Bahamas in Harbour Island, Lyford Cay (yes she personally hung the blinds for Sean Connery!), Paradise Island and residences in Atlantis. Steve and Susan have three children and one grandson. His youngest son Joe is a student at the Maritime Institute in Boston where he is pursuing his love of captaining boats. Ask Steve about his time as a professional football player for the Redskins – no joke! Steve has dropped the football now for the Hawaiian sling and enjoys spearfishing as often as he can.
Darvin Curry is Chris Thompson’s nephew and though born in Nassau, he has lived in Abaco since the age of four. He grew up at the knee of his legendary grandfather,Captain Leonard Thompson. Captain Thompson served 19 years as an elected official in the House of Assembly and had a major impact on Abaco – developing the two largest resorts on the island Treasure Cay Resort, marina and golf course as well as Great Abaco Beach Resort. Darvin attended Florida Air Academy and later Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. Upon graduation, Darvin returned to Abaco and enjoyed a brief career at the famous Nippers Bar & Grill. He is now the top agent for Chris Thompson Real Estate based in Great Guana Cay at Guana Hideaways. His passions include tennis and sailing.
Junior Mernard arrived in Hope Town from Haiti in 1984 with his mom. One of six children, Junior was a great student and attended Hope Town All Age School and Abaco Central High and began his career at Sea Spray Resort & Marina shortly after graduation. He worked his way up from dock master to manager of this resort with 7 villas, 60 full service slips, restaurant and bar. Junior dedicates time to Hope Town and was elected to the Elbow Cay Management Association by the community. He is now President and oversees improvements and rules that ensure our island retains its unique qualities and way of life. Junior is a musician at heart and when he finds time, plays a mean set of drums! If you own a boat, you probably have met Junior. The man is self-made, hard-working and as reliable as they come. He has dedicated 18 years to Sea Spray Resort and Marina. Junior has two amazing sons, Eric, an avid surfer and Spencer, a budding rapper – he has a you tube following, check him out! Willianne, his beautiful wife is a property manager and together with her husband own JR’s Cart Rentals, providing guest on the island with golf carts.
There are also hundreds of tiny cays and private islands for the more adventurous purchaser. Chris Thompson is a pilot and one recent client was flown around until he found the “right” island. Why not buy a private island? With satellite capabilities for phones, internet and television, the trend is to work and live wherever you desire without losing the effectiveness of being in a big city or stuck in an office building.
Abaco offers a quality of life seldom found elsewhere.
The friendly population, modern amenities, close proximity to the United States and the Bahamas' capital, Nassau, temperate climate and beneficial financial laws all qualify Abaco as an ideal second home, vacation home (there is a huge rental potential, especially on the quaint historic cays) or quite possibly your primary home. Don't miss the boat, the boat to ABACO!
We love Hope Town, a haven from the “real” world.
There is a relaxed sense of peace, tranquility and old-fashioned values as smiling locals go about their daily tasks. Traveling by bike or on foot since no motorized vehicles are allowed in the village, many stop and chat as they meet their neighbors. No one seems to be in a hurry as greetings are exchanged and news is shared.
Chris and his team will help you every step of the way. They have done it all – whether you are building, remodeling, developing or whether you want to invest in a Bahamian business. They have all the answers to any questions, from docks to landscaping, or the technical side of operating water makers or generators. The advantage of buying from Chris Thompson Real Estate is that we provide extra service, helping you transition to island life. Come! Let us share our special island with you and yours. We know Abaco!
